Our estate planning practice includes the preparation of wills, trust agreements and related documents for the purpose of minimizing income, gift, estate and generation skipping transfer taxes impacting the transfer of inherited wealth between generations. To the extent possible, integrated multi-generational plans are developed for the disposition and holding of family property to minimize the impact of these taxes. We also work with individuals in the particularly sensitive areas of living wills, advance health care directives, financial powers of attorney and other planning to minimize problems relating to incompetence and to help define the wishes and expectations of each of our clients.

Business Services

Cochran & Owen, LLC represents a range of private businesses, from large and mid-size companies to small, closely held firms, and has substantial experience in all aspects of business formation, operations and planning. We assist our clients with choosing the right business form, whether a corporation, limited liability company or partnership. This selection process examines factors such as the type of business, location(s) of business facilities, nature of business risks, taxation, passive versus active ownership and business growth and exit strategies. We prepare the organizational documents necessary for the entity, such as a charter or articles of formation, by-laws or operating agreement, organizational minutes, stock subscription agreements, stock or membership certificates, asset transfer documents and IRS and state tax forms and elections.

Employment Law

Our employment practice involves both advising employers on employment issues that arise in the workplace and litigating a variety of legal issues arising from the employer-employee relationship. While we primarily represent employers and senior management, we are also able to represent employees and have experience with the employee’s perspective, including through volunteer work with the Legal Services of Northern Virginia’s pro bono employment program.
